Want a Handmade Wishlist? Make a Spotlight!

Almost since Etsy was born, people have been asking for a Wishlist. They wanted a simple way to show their family and friends the handmade items they'd like to have as gifts. Many have also floated the idea of a handmade registry... a way to choose handmade items for their wedding gifts, baby showers, or house warmings. Etsy's Favorites feature, while very useful for bookmarking, just wasn't cutting it for a sharable, customizable wish list that could easily be passed to others via a link in an email.

Many global wish list alternatives have cropped up in the mean time, but all require a download or tool bar button of some type, preventing the easy adding or changing of wish list items from alternate computers, like one at work or a friend's house. And serious proponents of handmade work longed for a dedicated handmade Wishlist... one that wouldn't showcase hand crafted work in the same space as a pack of underwear from Walmart.

Enter byhand.me Spotlights. Now true aficionados of handmade work have a reliable, easy method of creating a wish list and sharing it with others. Cabin, Lodge or Arts & Crafts?

I've been rambling around the web trying to decide where the decorating niche lies for the Emu Tile Woodland series of knobs, robe hooks, etc. Clearly they'd be at home in a lodge or cabin setting, but what about country? I posted in one of the country oriented forums with some photos in the hope that those who champion country decor could shed some light.

Someone suggested that the look falls more into Arts & Crafts. That started me off on a search for the Arts & Crafts affecianados, which as far as I can tell, is also called Craftsman. Similar to Mission and/or Shaker, even. I shot off a few emails with photos hoping someone familiar with the Craftsman genre could offer some guidance as to where these would fit in.

I've yet to hear back, but in the meantime what do you think? Would these pieces be at home in a Craftsman bungalow? I'd love to hear your comments

Introducing the Woodland Series for Cabin & Lodge

Cabinet Knobs, Robe Hooks and other hardware for cabin and lodge are now available, created from the wonderful handmade artisan tile of Emily Ulm. These tiles are 2" square, and feature a rich, dark blue green over brown "Autumn" glaze. The first piece in the series is a robe / towel hook for use in the kitchen, bath, or closet. The hardware is brass and the complete piece extends approximately 2 1/4" from the wall when installed. The hooks include all necessary attachment hardware, including screws, which are hidden when installed. Here's to a Handmade New Year

With a new year at hand, I'm feeling lucky to be pondering resolutions with my toes in the sand. I've been thinking a lot about the handmade movement of late, and of the many creative and talented people who offer their work on the many handmade venues available on the web. Like many people across the country, their art is no longer a hobby but a lifeline of extra income needed to help provide for their families. So this coming year I'll be buying more handmade goods. I'll be sending my money to real people who make real products, and who will hopefully choose to use some of their income to buy what they need from real people too. Sometimes this will mean spending a bit more for goods than I would if I ordered from a Big Box retailer, but often I'll be getting a better product at a price similar to what I would have spent on mass market goods. I hope you'll join me in making a concerted effort to purchase handmade in 2009. For those of us who are serious about supporting the idea and the reality of handmade goods, buying handmade on line as well as locally is an easy, meaningful way to support your favorite artists. Exploring the Options

The post holiday lull is a great time to explore new possibilities. With the renewed interest in buying handmade items directly from the people who make them, there are suddenly a bounty of new places on line to find handmade goods. And the selection never ceases to amaze. I've purchased jams from a woman who makes them from the trees in her own backyard, artisan cheeses from a small farm in South Georgia, and handmade soap that you have to try to believe. There are small batch home coffee roasters, artists who work in clay or fiber, and jewelry artisans of every sort. And of course, those of us who create an ever evolving selection of home decor. With the plethora of items available, where does one start? It helps to find someone to guide you through the ever expanding sea of handmade, whether it's a website you're comfortable with or a blogger with tastes similar to your own. I'll be posting about sites I've found in my personal excursions across the web, but in the meantime I've selected three sites to showcase my own work. The links to my shops are in the upper left corner of this blog, and I'll be expounding upon why I've chosen those three in a future post.
